Chris was Wealden's Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for the last two general elections. A Lewes district councillor from 2007 to 2015, he has immense political experience at both the local and national level and says he is really pleased to be standing as the Lib Dems' East Sussex County Council candidate for Uckfield South with Framfield.
"I have lived between Uckfield and Lewes for more than 20 years," says Chris, "so I know and love the area as a local."
Chris' areas of specialist knowledge are the Environment and Education. He has a very strong environmental track record and was the founder of the Environmental Transport Association in 1990. He has also worked for the European Federation for Transport and Environment since 1991, and he led the transport chapter in the Lib Dems' recent beefed-up strategy to tackle climate change, which saw the party commit to make the UK net-neutral in greenhouse gases by 2045. In acknowledgement of all this, Chris has been officially accredited as a Green Lib Dem Candidate by the Green Liberal Democrats.
"I believe we need to restore trust in politics by getting council elections back to what they're supposed to be - a vote on which individual can best respresent our area in the local council," says Chris. "Because of severe financial pressures, the next county council is going to need all the skills and common sense it can get, and I believe my local knowledge, business background and communications skills can make me a very good representative, irrespective of my political views."
A writer and broadcaster by profession, Chris is well known to tennis fans as a commentator, and in 2019 was heard on national television commentating live on the historic, first-ever 12-12 tiebreak at Wimbledon. He is also the biographer of tennis legends Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, and in 2011 wrote Nick Clegg's biography. In 2016 he co-authored and co-edited - together with Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and Labour MP Lisa Nandy - the cross-party essay collection "The Alternative: towards a new progressive politics".
He has one daughter, who completed her A-Levels at a local sixth-form college last year and is now, like so many young people, navigating the challenges of being in her first year of higher education in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
Chris is also in high demand as a Quizmaster, having hosted several well attended online (via Zoom) fundraising quizzes, including for the Wealden LibDems (see pic at left). More information on Chris is available on his personal website.
