Gareth Owen-Williams - Crowborough South & St Johns

Gareth Owen-Williams

Gareth was elected as both Wealden District Councillor and Town Councillor for Crowborough Jarvis Brook in May 2019, and sits on the WDC Planning North Committee.

He admits he completely underestimated what this would entail when he first agreed to stand, but also vividly recalls the meeting which spurred him on. "In the summer of 2018, I attended a meeting at which the car park which served our Community Centre was sold off," he explains, "and was horrified when all three of our town's representatives left before the vote! This appalling decision spurred me on and gave me the reason I needed to keep trying to get elected against the odds. Our residents were not being represented regardless of which party was in charge."

While juggling work with his duties on the District and Town councils was a massive learning curve, Gareth says he's proud of what he and his other three Liberal Democrat colleages have already managed to achieve, whether in their individual wards or working together with the other opposition councillors (two from the Green Party and four independents), as well as with several increasingly unhappy members of the majority ruling party. He ensures he always does detailed research before Full Council and Planning Meetings so as to properly represent residents' interests, particularly when it comes to objecting to the slew of bad development proposals that have been ongoing since the total failure of the Conservatives' Wealden Plan last year.

"When I'm overwhelmed and frustrated at the challenge we face, I stop and imagine what it must have been like two years ago when there was just one party with no opposition at all," says Gareth. "It's for this reason that I am now standing for election to East Sussex County Council, where the increasingly out of touch Conservatives have had control for the past twenty years. The amount of complacency and lack of responsiveness to residents concern being shown by many of these Tory County Councillors is shocking. Crowborough residents deserve better."
