Jane Clark - Heathfield & Mayfield

Jane Clark

Jane has lived in rural Rotherfield for nearly 33 years, and recently retired from the local IT business she co-founded and ran with her husband Richard. "We sold the business on to our workforce," explains Jane, "and I'm very happy to say it continues to go from strength to strength, providing local skilled employment. We also worked closely with the local Community College to initiate their IT centre and provide work experience to young people looking at making a career in IT."

Jane was previously a Wealden District Councillor for 12 years and a Town Councillor for four, stepping down to look after her first grandchild so that her daughter could return to work. "I was on the planning committee for several years," says Jane, "and worked hard to ensure that we only approved appropriate new builds that truly met local needs - developments in the right place, of the right size and with the right design." She also fought to protect the nearby Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the many green spaces and special sites across Wealden. "I was always concerned with ensuring that the villages all retained their distinctive local characters," she says, "whilst also providing a better chance for local employment. I also chaired the Select Committee looking into, for example, the provision of water and other utilities for all the new houses that were, even then, being demanded by the Conservative Government."

As a Councillor, as well as undertaking local case work, Jane helped to establish several initiatives that are still going today, including a "one-stop-shop" for young people. She also organised dances for young teenagers and helped set up the local farmers market, which continues to happen monthly. "Working together cooperatively with councillors from across the political spectrum was key to our success," Jane explains. "We even managed to secure land from the District Council for a Community Centre, which is now built." ensuring a strong opposition to the Conservative Group that has been in power on our local council for far too long."

Having brought their family up in the beautiful Wealden countryside, Jane says that she and her husband are now looking to downsize, and are actively house-hunting in the rural villages of Heathfield and Mayfield. So she is pleased to get the chance to represent this area on the County Council, and pledges to not only fight for all residents, but also to help hold the ruling Conservative Group to account. "The Tories have held power locally, with too little opposition, for far too long," says Jane, who lists cooking, gardening and pilates amongst her hobbies. "Now that my grandchildren are all school aged and I've fully retired, I have both the time and the energy to properly serve the people of this area as their East Sussex County Councillor. Therefore, I hope that you will back me and vote for a positive change."
