*UPDATE May 7th 2021 - Paul Holbrook has won and been duly elected as the Wealden District Councillor for Hailsham North.
Hailsham's popular and hardworking Mayor Paul Holbrook is standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Wealden District Council ward of Hailsham North*.
Since becoming Mayor in May 2019, Paul has been extremely active and visible in the town, officiating all kinds of local events such as shop openings and charity events. "I try never to turn down an invitation from the community," says Paul. "Even if there's a clash with two things happening at once, I'll try to put in an appearance at both - as Mayor, I feel it's not just my duty to turn up when asked, but my privilege."
Paul recently released a statement to mark the anniversary of the first COVID-19 lockdown, in which he praised all the local NHS staff and front line workers and paid tribute to the great resilience and community spirit shown by Hailsham residents and business owners during what's been a really difficult year for everyone. "It has been a testing time for all of us, but there are many positives which have come to light in recent weeks," he says, "including the the successful vaccine roll-out, resulting in a new and more optimistic outlook for us - and a recovery that will put us back on track both socially and economically."
And just as he did last year, Paul has chosen to donate his Mayoral allowance (of around £1000), distributing it evenly amongst various local charities and community groups.
A long-serving member of the Town council representing Hailsham Central, Paul was also previously a Wealden District Councillor for Hailsham. Paul is a builder by trade and has lived in Hailsham for over 45 years, having raised a family here with his wife Barbara. They now have two of their grandchildren attending local schools.
Paul has been involved in the life of Hailsham for all that time and has become known for always standing up for the town and its residents. As Vice-Chair of Hailsham Town Council Planning committee, he was instrumental in the successful fight to get the Post Office back onto the high street.
