Steve Murphy is standing for election in the Hailsham Market division. Steve has recently retired as a consultant Electrical Engineer and has lived in Hailsham for over 30 years, raising his family there together with his wife Laura.
A former rugby coach at local and County level, Steve has also coached a number of local children's, youth, and women's teams. Steve, who has two grandchildren, now owns and runs a specialist history tour company bringing overseas visitors to our area.
Steve's experience as a Councillor is extensive, having represented Hailsham before on both Hailsham Town and East Sussex County Councils. He was also the man responsible for getting Hailsham East Community centre built. Steve pledges to use his vast and valuable experience to put the needs of Hailsham and its residents first.
He recently started a petition for a community hospital in Hailsham, which continues to gain widespread support from local residents. "Our town is missing out on vital local services," says Steve. "Because we don't have our own hospital, residents are forced to travel unnecessarily for their health care needs. Hailsham is a rapidly growing town without adequate infrastructure and local services."
Over 80% of respondents to a recent town-wide survey said they wanted fewer houses built and strongly supported the creation of a new NHS community hospital with day surgery, acute care and minor injuries unit. "I am calling on the Government to fulfil their promise about building 40 new hospitals and locate one of them in Hailsham," says Steve. "We need to stop developer greed and provide the infrastructure. We need a Community Hospital now!"
