District Council Secures Strong Budget

Liberal Democrats Help Secure Strong, Balanced Budget for Wealden
At today’s Wealden District Council meeting the Liberal Democrats, with the Alliance Group, successfully passed a balanced budget, ensuring continued investment in local services and our communities despite the uncertainty of government-led local government reorganisation.
Over the past quarter, Liberal Democrats in the administration have delivered key achievements, including:
- Securing over £1 million in grant funding for voluntary organisations over the next three years, strengthening support for local charities and community groups.
- Protecting Ashdown Forest by unlocking funding for the Winnie the Pooh centenary project, ensuring the forest is maintained for future generations.
- Allocating £160,000 to help the most vulnerable residents during the cost-of-living crisis.
- Signing a new seven-year waste collection contract with Biffa, expected to improve recycling rates and reduce missed bin collections.
- Driving forward better healthcare by submitting a planning application for a new medical and community centre in Mayfield and successfully bidding for land for a new medical centre in Polegate.
- Investing in green energy by installing solar panels on the Hailsham office roof to help heat the neighbouring swimming pool.
This strong financial position allows us to continue delivering for local communities, with key Liberal Democrat priorities including:
- Accelerating action on the climate emergency and investing in sustainable initiatives.
- Expanding cultural, sport, and leisure support across the district.
- Delivering a Local Plan that protects our environment and ensures sustainable development.
- Empowering local communities by improving communication with residents and councillors.
- Investing in staff development and apprenticeships, strengthening the Council’s ability to serve residents.
- Preventing homelessness and improving housing support services.
- Upgrading IT systems and expanding the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve Council efficiency.
- Planning ahead for local government reorganisation to protect services and ensure strong representation for Wealden residents.
- Building and acquiring more social housing while continuing the decarbonisation of existing council homes.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding local government changes, the Liberal Democrats are delivering real improvements for Wealden residents, protecting vital services, and securing funding for the future.
